Preparing for the Future: Say Goodbye to WINS in Windows Server
As IT administrators, we’re always navigating change. One such change is on the horizon—the removal of the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) from Windows Server releases starting in November 2034. Here’s what you need to know and how to prepare.
Understanding WINS Deprecation
WINS, a legacy computer name registration and resolution service, has been deprecated since the release of Windows Server 2022 in August 2021. Microsoft ceased active development and new feature work on WINS at that time. The final Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release to include WINS support will be Windows Server 2025, after which it will be removed from future releases.
Transitioning to Modern Name Resolution Solutions
Microsoft urges organizations to migrate to modern Domain Name System (DNS)-based name resolution solutions before November 2034. Once WINS is removed, Windows Server will no longer include the WINS server role, management console snap-in, automation APIs, and related interfaces.
Migrating from WINS to DNS
Organizations still dependent on WINS are advised to immediately begin auditing services and applications that rely on NetBIOS name resolution. To replace WINS functionality, consider using conditional forwarders, split-brain DNS, or search suffix lists with DNS.
Avoiding Temporary Workarounds
Microsoft cautions against temporary workarounds such as static host files, stating that they don’t scale and aren’t sustainable for enterprise environments. It is recommended to invest in a comprehensive migration plan instead.
Planning Ahead: Budget Season Approaches
As we approach the budget season of 2026, understanding the WINS removal and its impact on your organization can help you make informed decisions regarding migration planning and investment.
Embracing Change for a Secure Future
Now is the time to review dependencies, evaluate DNS migration plans, and prioritize budget allocations accordingly. Organizations relying on WINS for NetBIOS name resolution are strongly encouraged to begin migration planning immediately to avoid disruptions.
By embracing change and investing in modern solutions, we can ensure a secure and efficient IT infrastructure for the future.
